Pair of Binga Baskets (aka Tonga Baskets)

Two Mid Century Binga Baskets. Originally (and still) used for winnowing grain, these baskets can also store various items, or hold fruit. When more than one is hung in a group as a collage, they become a beautiful display of wall art. They are also lovely as a solo art piece. Though the weave is called a “simple weave”, referring to the over & under style of weaving, it is a time consuming and exacting craft. Tonga women in the Northern Zimbabwe region of Binga, expertly weave the baskets, most having learned the traditional techniques from elders. Crafted primarily from Ilala Palm, other organic materials from nature are also used, such as wild grasses and small vines. Tree bark is used to dye the palm leaves which creates the color variations. Each basket takes days to finish. They are fairly lightweight, yet strong, and finished using a coiled rim with a distinctive herringbone pattern. Each basket is truly one of a kind; unique in pattern, color and size. One measures 13”; the other 13.75”. This size typically sells for $48 each online, and vintage Binga baskets sell for more.
