-Authentic Polynesian Tapa Cloth, or Bark Cloth, Made from Tree Bark -I don’t know the exact year of this tapa cloth. The numbers on the design of this tapa cloth might be a date? Looks like the numbers are 1-8-1942?? My WW1-generation grandfather brought these back with him. -Ofa’atu is an expression of love. Vava’u is a group of islands in the Tongan kingdom. -A similar tapa cloth was recently displayed in a prominent art museum’s Henri Matisse exhibit. That one dates to “about 1948.” Following his trip to Tahiti, Matisse built up a significant collection of tapa, made from the inner bark of various native trees, in the 1930s and 1940s. -I have listed the best of my grandfather’s tapa cloths. See my other listing(s). -Don’t hesitate to ask questions. -Reasonable offers most certainly will be considered. -This will be shipped either rolled up in acid-free tissue paper or folded in acid-free tissue paper and wrapped in protective plastic. -Smoke-free, pet-free home.

csizezero @vunatuna74 Thank you very much! I’m pretty sure these tapa cloths of my grandfather’s are from the 1940’s. Not 100% positive. Can you tell?

vunatuna74 @csizezero not sure of date either. I am Tongan-American and have several larger tapa cloths. In Tonga they are called Ngatu and are generally given as gifts at weddings. My grandmother used to make them in Tonga and for show tourists the trade at the Polynesian Cultural Center after moving to Hawaii.
