Founding of Royal Copenhagen Bicentenary 1775-1975
The first plate in the Royal Copenhagen Bicentennial Series, which started with Royal Copenhagen Bicentenary 1775-1975 and continued with the US Bicentennial 1776-1976. This 1975 plate commemorates the Bicentennial (1775-1975) of the year that the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactury was granted its charter to build its first porcelain factory. This plate features a young woman carefully hand painting a large porcelain vase, with Copenhagen skyline and many of its famous towers in the background.
It took four more years to raise the money, choose the location, build and staff the factory. The first porcelain items were produced and ready for sale in 1779. Initially, all porcelain was to be blue painted, and the first items to be produced were in the Blue Fluted pattern, later known as “pattern #1”. Blue Fluted has been in production for more than 240 years and is the oldest continuously produced china pattern in the world.
Design embossed on Danish porcelain and hand painted in traditional Copenhagen cobalt blue under the glaze. Diameter approximately 7.25 inch (18 cm), fully marked on the back including the three wavy line trademark of Royal Copenhagen. Wired & ready to hang. Designed by Sven Vestergaard.
Only “flaw” shown in photos on back, looks like a glazing misfire. Excellent pre-loved condition, no chips or cracks. Does not come with original box or papers. Please see other Copenhagen listings.
