Takumi Hatakeyama is a Japanese fashion designer and co-founder of T.H.D La Maison Studios. Working alongside his wife, Junko Sugata at their joint studio, his work is best known for its attention to wearable, real clothing with an artistic flair, a growing market in many of Japan’s designer fashion outlets and department stores. Hatakeyama is well known for his conservative clothing that features eccentricities in small yet potent bits that allow older, more mature women to indulge a bit without buying the overly eccentric clothing that many young designers and firms create. His influences are said to be Moschino and Jean Charles de Castelbajac, which appears in the frequent use of skirt and jacket mismatches and the mixture of classical cuts in his clothing with rough, modern textures. Knits are among his favorite materials to use as they allow for more design possibilities with the single thread. Current designs are often composed of modern aesthetics and styles from across the spectrum of the area. Hatakeyama admittedly draws much from his surroundings in Harajuku but tries to maintain some bits of classicism to keep the brand fresh.
