A piece of history, these canvas bags carried lead shot. Early lead shot use is documented from the Ship Pirated by Blackbeard in 1716-1718. Blackbeards pirates would fill the cannons with lead shot wrapped in canvas and add nails and glass to fire on their prey ship.They didnt want to destroy the other ship, they wanted the other ship to be undamaged. It was a scare tactic to encourage surrender. These bags are by no means as old as Blackbeard, but the continued use of lead shot carried through many wars since then and even older wars in the 16th century. It is often now used as Bird Shot.
