Victorian Grouse Foot Brooch with Sterling Silver Detail. From the 1910's.
Rare find — this item is hard to come by.
I suppose a Victorian Chicken foot was supposed to bring luck like a rabbit's foot.
Not to be confused with the lucky rabbit’s foot, the grouse’s foot was another good luck charm for the hunt — predominantly in the Scottish Highlands, where men used them as kilt pins. The creature’s claws were usually bedecked in precious or semi-precious jewels and mounted in silver — though costume versions were also available. These brooches became popular adornments for ladies’ scarves and cloaks during the Victorian era.
I originally purchased this brooch from UK.
It may have been a kilt pin originally. In great condition, no damage whatsoever. Top end of brooch has a sterling silver tip with a decorative design stamped into it. Pin back. Grouse's foot has a sterling silver "ring" on his finger (which I've seen on all other pieces like this.) Measures 4.5 inches long.
Retail price: $125.00-$280.00 depending upon seller.
