This early turquoise and shell heishe (i) necklace is from the same family as the turquoise nugget and silver bead necklace listed. It dates from the late mid-century, circa 1960. The shell and turquoise are hand drilled, and it is strung on what looks like a waxed cord, not on chain which is used in much newer heishi necklaces. The necklace measures approximately 15in length, and the cord is strong. The clasp is the typical clasp used by all Southwestern tribes of the time period. The necklace is an early one and is ready to wear. It is Native American by style, but since all tribes learned from one another's skills over many years, it is difficult to attribute this necklace to any particular Southwestern tribe, though the Zuni are known for their lapidary skills. If you love turquoise and Native American jewelry, this vintage heishe necklace of turquoise and shell will make a nice addition to your early Native American jewelry collection.
