Signed poster from Fraenkel Gallery's 2009 Richard Misrach exhibition in San Francisco. Dimensions: 15" x 20" (38 x 51 cm) sheet. Signed by artist in silver metallic marker on front. Excellent condition never framed or displayed.
This Richard Misrach solo exhibition comprised approximately 14 large-scale photographs made over the previous two years. These new photographs marked a radical break with his work to date, in that they were his first images made without film. Working with a state-of-the-art digital camera yielding astonishing detail, Misrach deftly switched positive and negative along the color spectrum. The images extended the artist's longstanding interest in landscape and seascape imagery, yet they transform nature in extreme and heretofore technologically impossible ways. Rocks vibrate with saturated tones and surf takes on improbable deep red shades. Misrach's panoramic images become even more mysterious. Seen in total, the series suggests an apocalyptic vision of the natural world as we know it.
Haystack Rock is a 235-foot sea stack in Cannon Beach, OR. It is sometimes claimed locally to be the third-tallest such "intertidal" structure in the world. A popular tourist destination, the monolithic rock is adjacent to the beach and accessible by foot at low tide. The Haystack Rock tide pools are home to many intertidal animals, including starfish, crabs, chitons, limpets, and sea slugs.
