Although Papa grumbles that they don't need another quilt, Mama goes right on with her plans to hold a quilting party to make a Texas Star. After the chores to prepare for winter, the whole family pitches in to ready the quilting room and quilting frame for guests. Then Mama cooks and bakes for the all-day event--another family affair. After the quilters leave, Papa grudgingly admits that they needed that quilt after all. Told from the point of view of the two young daughters, the story overflows with the sense of cooperation, hard work, and basic joys experienced by the family and their neighbors. Full-page, double-spread watercolors present the action from a variety of perspectives, each one bursting with activity but free of clutter. Appropriate to the uncomplicated lifestyle are the large rounded figures and simple features of the intergenerational, interracial quilters who gather in fellowship for food and handiwork. Along with the warm relationships of family and friends, the story brings to light the bonding art of quilting.
