Our furry and feathered friends have been keeping us warm since the dawn of time! Animal Fibers are items such as wool, down, cashmere, alpaca, angora, fur and leather. Unfortunately, this has grown to be a huge industry for profit and now many of our fashions are by-products of the food industry. In the last 10 years many man-made alternates have been popularized, such as faux fur and vegan leather, but the truth behind these is that 99% of them are plastic. Bronze Star: Get It Certified! Look for regenerative &/or organic wool, cashmere & alpaca. The Leather Working Group & Responsible Down/Wool standard ensure that no animals were harmed in the production. Seek out Peace silk that avoids killing silk worms to obtain the precious fibers. Brands should at minimum maintain products meet the UK’s 5 freedom act. Silver Star: Find a Second Life! Recycling animal fibers is an age old tradition. In Porto, Italy they are known for their mastery of this process! There is NO water or dye used in this process, and the colors are rich and unique! Gold Star: Don’t Buy it New! You can help to protect our four legged friends and fowl by shopping only vintage items if and when you need a garment with animal products. Keep an eye on non-plastic/non-animal innovations in this space using mycelium (mushrooms). PS there is no positive way to use angora so unless it’s vintage, best to pass. Have questions!?
