Rainbow Row is the name for a series of thirteen colorful historic houses in Charleston, representing the longest cluster of Georgian row houses in the United States: 79 to 107 East Bay Street. This series of 13 brightly-colored houses along the waterfront is one of Charleston’s most photographed spots. It represents the longest cluster of Georgian row houses in the United States. You might be surprised to learn that the houses that make up Rainbow Row were not always brightly colored. These historic homes were first constructed around 1740 and were used by merchants who would run their business on the ground floor and live on the top floor. After the Civil War, this area was rather run-down and considered a slum.
