In May 1963 the United States Marine Corps discontinues use of their target ranges at Camp Matthews in San Diego, California due to civilian encroachment and consequent safety hazards. By mid-1964 the USMC's weapons training is relocated to Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California and the site of Camp Matthews is turned over to the University of California, San Diego.
