@weiklewadell hi sorry I’m getting back to you a day later. To answer your question it is a pin it closes and you turn the tiny clasp after you place the pin part into it and it stays closed until you open it

Also, the gray background is new to me - is that also shell, do you know? - I know that some are shell, some lava, some glass - but it doesn't look dark enough to be lava - and the 'nose' dates this to be about '50s-60s ? Does that seem right - or newer? Thanks so much again - Debby

I don’t have the piece in front of me right at the moment because I’m not home but I believe the background is also shell and I think it’s newer actually and as far as the size goes 2 inches sounds about right but I would have to measure it and give you the exact measurements. Unfortunately I’m not home to actually give you an answer probably won’t be home until Thurs/Fri

@deborahbrosene we went to Sorrento and traveled around. I have forgotten the actual town in Italy where they make their cameos by hand! My only regret That I didn’t buy any because I had bought gold but luckily my husband bought me my first cameo pendant !

@deborahbrosene hello. I measured the brooch and yes it is approximately 2 inches and has a blackish/grey background behind lady with somewhat of white border encircling the head down around to sides. It is sterling and Marcasite. Have a wonderful day ! 😊
