Jean Paul Gaultier defined French haute couture and prêt-à-porter fashion. He is described as an "enfant terrible" of the fashion industry and is known for his unconventional designs with motifs including corsets, marinières, and tin cans.
Circa 1989, this Jean Paul Gaultier Femme Linen Waistcoat is a piece of fashion history from the height of his corset/waistcoat phase. This is a beautiful striking red linen with a multicolored striped silk lining. Looks military and menswear when fully buttoned in the double-breasted style, or more flowy and feminine when worn open. A cousin to the yellow waistcoat featured in the Anna Wintour Costume Center, a wing of the Metropolitan Museum housing the Costume Institute as shown in the screenshot. RARE and ONE OF A KIND!
The owners of James Veloria Vintage Clothing describe collecting vintage Gaultier pieces as: “Gaultier clothing is so desirable because everything he put out was consistently well-made, unique, and innovative for its time,” they tell NYLON in an interview. “He was way ahead of his time in so many ways with inclusive sizing, playing with gender norms, and representing so many different subcultures through his clothing in really exciting ways."
