Antique Shell Box Victorian Mermaid Purse Mother of Pearl Coin Pocket Brass

Mother of Pearl Clam Shell Box / Coin Purse / Pill Box with ormolu or brass mount, hinge and clasp. Also known as a “Mermaid Purse” and needle case, these lovely little purses were popular in the 19th century, appealing to the Victorians love of the natural world. They have been continually made in seaside communities, making this difficult to date, but I’m confident it’s Victorian era based on the fine, delicate brass work, larger size (and fact it’s from my antique-loving mother’s collection). This lightweight box has an all-over mother of pearl finish and delicate feel. The soft pastel shades of the shell are just gorgeous: translucent ivory with gold and iridescent rainbow highlights. The shell is has brass trim / mount, hinge and a looped push clasp that works very well. Striking decor piece for your antique, eclectic or beach house. Or as an especially charming pill box or needle case. Measures 4 1/4” by nearly 3” by 1 1/2”. Condition is excellent considering its age.
