jfixer What does it mean that they are "gold filled"?? How is that different from being 'solid gold'?

nspearson @jfixer Gold filled is a super thick layer of gold over a base metal, usually brass. The layer is significantly thicker then gold plated. Gold plated jewelry is not water safe, whereas gold filled is. Gold filled is almost like buying solid gold, but without the price tag. The gold layering will last up to 30 years, while gold plated generally lasts only 2 years or less before the base metal is exposed. Solid gold is a forever kind of thing. Gold vermeil is gold plating over sterling silver.

nspearson The layering on gold vermeil is thicker than gold plated, but not as thick as gold filled. In the US it is illegal to list an item as gold vermeil unless the base metal is sterling silver. Not all countries enforce that convention.
