These balloons, particularly the advanced Parseval-Siegsfeld type, replaced older spherical designs with a more stable, kite-like form. Equipped with telephones, observers in wicker baskets would relay intelligence to ground command, while the balloons themselves were protected by anti-aircraft guns and escorted by fighter planes.
