"Black Box Collotype" refers to a former fine art printing company that specialized in the collotype process, a high-quality, screenless photomechanical printing technique capable of reproducing continuous-tone photographs. Founded by master printer Michael Intrator, the company, based in Chicago, was one of the last practitioners of the laborious and expensive collotype method before closing in 2004.
Key Aspects of Black Box Collotype:
Mastery of Collotype: Black Box Collotype was known for its exceptional ability to produce detailed, continuous-tone prints, often considered indistinguishable from original photographic prints.
Screenless Process: Unlike offset lithography, collotype doesn't use dots (halftones) to create images, resulting in smooth tonal gradations and solid colors.
Founder: Michael Intrator, a master printer, led the company and was known for his expertise in continuous-tone imaging and inventions in digital collotype.
Laborious & Expensive: The process was time-consuming, requiring multiple passes for complex color prints, making it much more expensive than modern offset printing.
