They did that so the space between the buttons wouldn’t pucker open. Now it’s a pullover style so you’d have to put on over your head. The last photo is from the inside of the shirt at the 3rd button to show it’s sewn but hidden. Still looks like a full button down. Essential fitted side slit style for work or weekend.
