Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a serious and chronically debilitating condition with potentially permanent effects on vision, cognition, and quality of life. The disease, caused by elevated pressure inside the skull, can mimic a brain tumor, and despite treatment, many patients continue to struggle with its long-term impacts.
Permanent vision loss
The most feared complication of IIH is irreversible blindness due to damage to the optic nerve.
Papilledema: The heightened intracranial pressure causes swelling of the optic nerve, a condition called papilledema. If this swelling is severe or chronic, it can permanently harm the nerve.
Progressive vision impairment: Vision loss often begins in the peripheral (side) vision before moving inward. In some cases, vision deteriorates slowly over time, while a rare "fulminant" form can cause rapid, severe visual loss within weeks.
Surgical risk: Even surgical interventions carry the risk of complication. For instance, optic nerve sheath fenestration (ONSF), which aims to relieve pressure on the optic nerve, can cause permanent visual loss in a small percentage of patients.
Persistent, disabling headaches
For many IIH patients, the headaches are a constant and severe source of misery, even when the intracranial pressure has been stabilized.
