Wajima nuri is a lacquerware that applied a thick base on the wood to achieve both durability and beauty.
Its unique base is made by kneading diatomaceous earth made of microbial fossils with water, unglazed, and then mixing finely crushed diatomaceous earth (Wajima ground powder) with lacquer. The technique was established in the Edo period, and it is now a traditional Japanese craft that is famous as a high-class lacquerware all over the world.
Among all the lacquerware items handcrafted in Japan, Wajima-nuri is the only lacquerware that has been designated as a National Important Intangible Cultural Foundation.
