Collected here in a contemporary 20th century translation. With these tales we meet witches, trolls and ogres, sly foxes and mysterious bears, beautiful princesses and country lads turned heroes. Includes the 1879 illustrations.
First published 1845, it was only after second edition in 1852 these tales became popular. In 1879 the illustrated version appeared. This edition, 1960, has new English translations by an American Fulbright scholar and a devoted Norwegian folklorist.
Hardcover has tan boards with red spine, gold lettering on spine, red rooster on front cover, but only part of the front flap from the dust jacket glued on reverse of ffep. This copy retired from a public library. Has usual pastings and ink stamps from the library. Cloth along spine & cover edges is torn but stabilized with tape. Pre-title page torn out, but laid in. Interior text is tight, respectfully clean and unmarked by readers.
