Colorful design shows both the Blue installation in Japan and the Yellow in Lebec, California October 1991.
At sunrise on October 9, 1991, 1800 workers started to open the 3100 umbrellas for the The Umbrellas project in Ibaraki and California in the presence of Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
For the project eleven companies in Japan, the U.S., Germany, and Canada had prepared the various components of the umbrellas: fabric, aluminium surface, steel base frames, anchors, the lower supporting elements made of wood, sandbags, and the covers for the umbrella bases. All 3100 umbrellas were assembled in Bakersfield, California, from where 1340 blue umbrellas were shipped to Japan.
