This is a sealing ring owned and used by Lucy Scribner Skidmore. Sealing rings have been in use for centuries to seal a letter or document meant for an express persons perusal only. If the carrier broke the seal prior to it getting to the recipient, it would be obvious that courier was untrustworthy and the message was now public. The initials or shield of identification are reversed, so when the ring is pressed into the hot wax and removed, a clear reading of the sender can be seen in the wax. Lucy's ring has two dates carved in the stone: 1911-1922. The year 1911 was the year she wanted to make her parents proud by opening SKIDMORE COLLEGE, and 1922 for the year she handed the reins over to Charles Henry Keyes as first president of Skidmore. The Scudamore Family shield was used in agreement since their motto: SCUTO AMORIS DIVINI was adopted by Lucy for the college. The ring was acid tested as 18K pink gold and is size 6.5. This would make a wonderful gift for any Skidmore College student or Alumni. What better protection than wearing the ring of The Scudamore Shield bearing the motto: "With the Shield of Divine Love". The last photo of the ring shows the reverse engraving mirrored so you can read it clearly.
NOTE: Current President at Skidmore, Marc C. Conner PHD verified it is identical to her secondary ring in the Skidmore Museum in NY.
