Beautiful art
Excellent vintage condition
This beautiful little lacquer box comes from the village of Palekh, where in the days prior to the revolution (1918) the resident artists were renowned for their Icon painting.
The small town of Palekh is located 350 kilometers east of Moscow. Palekh was previously a center for icon painting and as such is mentioned several times in documents from the 18th century.
After the revolution of 1917, the new times demanded other themes and subjects than religious ones. The decor received peasant and revolutionary themes as motifs, a reflection of the heroes of the people, harvests, fishing, hunting, circle dancing and joy.
The graduates of the Palekh College of the late 60s and early 70s began a revival by returning to the sources of Palekh. This generation has in many respects paved the way for its future development.
The influx of talented young people promises further development and prosperity in Palekh Art.
